Steam Genre Preferences Shape AI Acceptance in Games

Steam Genre Preferences Shape AI Acceptance in Games

New survey data from a recent Steam player study reveals that attitudes toward AI-generated content in games vary significantly depending on the genres players enjoy most. The findings come from a survey of 3,800 Steam users who were asked about their willingness to purchase games that disclose any use of AI in their development.

The research team cross-referenced survey responses with public Steam account data to see which games respondents had actually played for more than five hours. This approach allowed them to identify patterns between player preferences and their acceptance of AI disclosure.

Players who spent significant time in grittier, more realistic strategy and AAA titles showed notably higher acceptance rates. For instance, 53.9 percent of Frostpunk players were accepting of AI use in games, while only 21.4 percent were non-accepting. Battlefield 6 players showed a similar trend, with 41.8 percent accepting and 36.4 percent non-accepting.

The opposite pattern emerged for players of pixel art, cozy, and roguelite games. Balatro players were only 26.9 percent accepting of AI use, with 51.8 percent opposed. Hollow Knight Silksong players showed similar resistance, with just 31.3 percent accepting and 47.5 percent non-accepting.

Genre-level analysis reinforced these findings. Players of naval games, 4X strategy, grand strategy, and base building titles were most accepting. Those who enjoyed idle games, boomer shooters, auto battlers, and roguelike deckbuilders were least accepting.

Age also played a role, though not in the way many might expect. Players under 25 showed 41 percent acceptance, while those aged 35 to 44 were at 45 percent. The 45 and older group, which made up only 7.2 percent of respondents, shifted about 5 percent of their responses from accepting to neutral, suggesting they simply care less about the issue either way.

The researchers caution against overinterpreting these results. They emphasize that the survey measured sentiment toward minimal AI disclosure, not a desire for AI-generated content. They also note they are not endorsing AI use that replaces human labor, but rather exploring which segments of the Steam audience are more or less comfortable with this emerging trend.
