As the industry barrels toward an all-digital future, a quiet counter-movement is thriving in strip malls and downtown corners. Joe Jayman, owner of a community-focused game shop, sees it every day. The numbers tell a mixed story. Big-box chains have shrunk their gaming sections, but independent shops report steady foot traffic, especially from younger players curious about retro hardware and from parents who want advice face-to-face. Jayman says the key is adapting without losing soul. He now sells digital gift cards alongside dusty N64 controllers, but the real product is the conversation.

"You don't get a stranger high-fiving you when you beat a boss in the cloud," he laughed. "Here, we celebrate together. That's not nostalgia. That's the future of community." For now, his register keeps ringing, one physical copy at a time.
