Bain & Co: Research shows only one in five players seek out new titles

A new report from consulting firm Bain & Company suggests that the video game industry's reliance on established sequels and safe bets may be missing a key opportunity. The research indicates that only about one in five players actively seeks out new intellectual property or original titles when making a purchase decision. The vast majority, roughly 80 percent, prefer to spend their time and money on franchises they already know and trust.

However, the study's findings offer a more nuanced picture for developers. While the audience for brand-new worlds is a minority, that group is highly engaged and willing to take risks. More importantly, the Bain report argues that games designed with a clear, focused vision tend to outperform those built as generic, all-purpose products. The data suggests that a title with a distinct artistic direction or a specific gameplay hook has a higher chance of commercial success than a polished but bland experience that tries to appeal to everyone.

The firm's analysts point out that the industry often confuses broad appeal with quality. A game that tries to be everything to everyone often ends up satisfying no one. Instead, the report recommends that studios double down on a strong core concept, even if that concept targets a smaller audience. The findings suggest that players who do venture into new territory are more likely to become loyal fans and advocates, driving word-of-mouth that no marketing budget can buy. For publishers, the takeaway is clear: originality, when executed with clarity and confidence, remains a viable and potentially lucrative strategy, even in a market dominated by sequels.
