Director Edgar Wright, best known for films like "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and "Baby Driver," has shared his skepticism about the value of adapting video games into movies. In a recent interview, Wright explained that he does not see the point of video game films, arguing that the medium is fundamentally different from cinema.
"Video games are meant to be played, not watched," Wright said. He noted that while movies are a passive experience, games require active participation. This core difference, he believes, makes it difficult to translate the engagement of a game into a satisfying film. Wright pointed out that the best video game adaptations often feel like they are missing something, because they strip away the player's agency.
The director also clarified that he has no plans to direct a video game movie himself. Despite his success with "Scott Pilgrim," which was based on a graphic novel that itself drew heavily from video game culture, Wright sees a clear line between homage and direct adaptation. He suggested that filmmakers should focus on telling original stories rather than trying to replicate the interactive thrill of a game on screen. His comments add to a long-running debate about whether video game movies can ever truly capture the spirit of their source material.
