The Human Cost of Delivering Layoff News

The phrase "it's just business" gets repeated often in corporate settings, but anyone who has sat across from a coworker to deliver layoff news knows that explanation rarely holds up. A recent account from someone who has been on that side of the table describes the experience as deeply uncomfortable and emotionally draining.

The person explained that the role of delivering termination news often falls to managers or HR staff who have no say in the decision itself. They described sitting in a room, reading from a script, and watching someone's face change as the reality sets in. The script is designed to be neutral, but the moment feels anything but. There is no good way to tell a person that their job is gone, especially when the person hearing it has done nothing wrong.

The account also touched on the guilt that lingers afterward. Delivering the news does not end when the meeting does. The person described walking back to their desk, seeing the empty chair, and fielding questions from remaining team members who are scared they might be next. The emotional weight does not disappear at the end of the day.

What stands out most is the honesty about how hollow the corporate language feels in those moments. Words like "restructuring" and "position elimination" are meant to soften the blow, but they often make the conversation feel colder. The person behind the script is still human, and the person receiving the news is too.
