New market data reveals that physical video game software sales in the United States fell to just 85 million dollars in July, marking the lowest total for that month since record keeping began in 1995. The figure represents a sharp drop from previous years and underscores how quickly the industry is shifting away from disc-based games.
According to industry analysts, the decline is not a surprise but the scale of the drop is notable. July has historically been a slower month for game releases, but even so, the current numbers reflect a broader trend that has been building for over a decade. Digital downloads, subscription services, and cloud gaming now account for the vast majority of spending on console and PC titles. Physical copies, once the standard for every major launch, are increasingly reserved for collector's editions or niche audiences.
The 85 million dollar total includes sales of new physical games for consoles like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. It does not include used game sales or accessories. The previous July low was recorded in 2021, when physical sales hovered around 100 million dollars. That number itself was considered weak at the time, but the latest figures show an even steeper contraction.
Part of the reason for the drop is the lack of major blockbuster releases in July. Most publishers now stagger their biggest titles across the fall and holiday seasons to maximize digital sales, which do not require physical production or shipping. retailers have reduced shelf space for games, and some major chains have stopped carrying them altogether.
The shift has been accelerated by the success of subscription services like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, which allow players to access large libraries for a flat monthly fee. Many gamers, especially younger ones, have never bought a physical game and see no reason to start. Even when a big title does launch, digital pre-orders often dominate the first week of sales.
Analysts expect the trend to continue, with physical sales possibly falling below 50 million dollars for a single month within the next few years. Some have speculated that the next generation of consoles might not include disc drives at all, though no major manufacturer has confirmed such a move. For now, physical media remains a small but stubborn part of the market, kept alive by collectors and those with slower internet connections. But the latest July numbers make it clear that its role is shrinking faster than many predicted.
