The legal hunt for the people behind the massive Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks has taken a new turn. Rockstar Games, the studio developing the game, has filed subpoenas against both Microsoft and Discord. The move is part of an ongoing effort to identify the individuals who shared early gameplay footage and development assets online.
The filings, which have surfaced in recent court documents, confirm what many fans already suspected. At least some of the leaked material is authentic. That means the clips and screenshots that spread across social media in late 2022 and early 2023 were not fakes or elaborate fan creations. They came from inside the development process.
Rockstar is now asking Microsoft and Discord to hand over account information, IP addresses, and other identifying data linked to the leaks. The company wants to trace the original source of the unauthorized uploads. Discord is a key target because much of the leaked content was shared in private servers before it hit public platforms. Microsoft is involved because of its ownership of GitHub, where some of the stolen files may have been stored or distributed.
This is not the first time Rockstar has taken legal action over the leaks. Earlier this year, the studio filed a similar request against a teenager in the UK who was arrested in connection with the breach. That case is still moving through the courts. The new subpoenas suggest the investigation is widening, and Rockstar is not backing down.
For players, the news is a mixed bag. On one hand, it is disappointing to know that the leaks were real, because it spoils some surprises. On the other hand, it shows that the studio is serious about protecting its work. The next official look at GTA 6 is still expected to come from Rockstar itself, likely in the form of a proper trailer. Until then, the legal battle behind the scenes continues.
