Atari might be planning to revive another piece of its retro hardware history. A recent trademark application suggests the company is looking at bringing back a machine from 1983: the Atari 800XL. This 8-bit home computer was a popular model during the early days of personal computing, competing with systems like the Commodore 64.
The filing, submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, covers the "Atari 800XL" name and is categorized under "computer game hardware" and "computer game software." While trademark applications do not always lead to actual products, this move fits Atari's current strategy of re-releasing classic hardware. In recent years, the company has launched updated versions of the Atari 2600 and the Atari VCS.
The original 800XL featured a full keyboard, 64KB of RAM, and a cartridge slot for games. It was known for its solid build and strong graphics for its time. If Atari does release a modern version, it could follow the pattern of other retro reissues, possibly including HDMI output, built-in game libraries, or even a miniature form factor.
Fans of 1980s computing have been asking for a proper revival of the 8-bit line for years. Whether this trademark leads to an actual product or remains a legal placeholder, it has already sparked discussion among collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts. Atari has not made an official announcement, but the filing is a strong hint that the company is at least considering the idea.
