REVIEW: Still Wakes the Deep

REVIEW: Still Wakes the Deep

The claustrophobic corridors of a doomed oil rig become the stage for a masterclass in tension in the compelling horror experience, Still Wakes the Deep. This narrative-driven game proves that less can indeed be more, leveraging constrained gameplay mechanics to amplify a pervasive sense of dread.

Players navigate the crumbling Beira D oil platform in the 1970s, not as a combat-ready hero, but as an ordinary electrician named Caz McLeary. The gameplay primarily involves exploration, environmental puzzle-solving, and desperate evasion from an unknowable entity. This deliberate limitation of player power is the game's greatest strength. Without weapons or means to fight back, every shadowy hallway and echoing groan of metal becomes a potential threat, making the act of simply moving forward an exercise in anxiety.

The setting itself is a character. The howling North Sea wind, the oppressive labyrinth of industrial machinery, and the increasingly unnatural distortions of the rig create an atmosphere that is both eerily beautiful and utterly terrifying. The sound design is impeccable, layering industrial ambiance with unsettling biological sounds that hint at the grotesque transformation overtaking the platform and its crew.

Still Wakes the Deep excels in making the player feel isolated and vulnerable. Its story of catastrophe and cosmic horror unfolds through found documents and desperate character interactions, pulling you deeper into its grim reality. By focusing on immersion and atmosphere over complex mechanics, the game delivers a potent and memorable horror journey that lingers long after the final, chilling moments.
