A sealed, untouched copy of the original Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo Entertainment System has sold for a staggering $3 million, setting a new world record for a single video game. The sale was confirmed by collectibles marketplace Rally, which facilitated the private transaction. The price obliterates the previous record of $1.56 million set in a 2021 private sale for the same title.
The game, which was produced in 1985 for the NES, is considered one of the most iconic and influential video games of all time. What made this particular copy so valuable was its condition. It was a "sealed" copy, meaning the shrink wrap had never been removed. The box was graded by Wata Games, a third-party authentication service, and received a near-perfect score of 9.8 out of 10 for its mint condition. Experts say the game's rarity, combined with its pristine state and cultural significance, drove the price to new heights.
The buyer's identity was not disclosed. The previous record of $1.56 million was set in a private sale in 2021, also for a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. That sale had already shattered the prior record of $660,000 for a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros 3. The latest transaction underscores the booming market for rare video game memorabilia, where collectors are willing to pay millions for pieces of gaming history that have survived in near-perfect condition.
