‘Mixtape’ Review (PC): A Surprisingly Flat Note

"Mixtape" arrives with a promise of '90s nostalgia, wrapping itself in the aesthetics of cassette tapes, skate parks, and indie rock. But for a game that should hum with energy and heart, it plays a bizarrely out-of-tune melody. The premise is simple: you follow a group of friends through a single, pivotal night, piecing together their memories through interactive vignettes. The problem is that these vignettes feel less like a curated mix of emotional highs and more like a shuffled playlist of forgotten B-sides.

The characters, meant to be the soul of the experience, come across as hollow archetypes. They speak in a stilted, overly scripted dialogue that tries too hard to capture teen angst, landing somewhere between a network sitcom and a half-remembered dream. The gameplay itself is minimal, mostly consisting of walking and triggering dialogue trees that rarely offer meaningful choices. The much-touted soundtrack, which should be the game's anchor, feels mismatched. Instead of evoking a specific time and place, the songs often clash with the on-screen action, creating a jarring disconnect rather than a cohesive mood.

"Mixtape" fails to capture the messy, electric feeling of youth. It tries to wrap its arms around a decade's worth of culture but ends up with a hollow shell. The result is a game that is technically competent but emotionally flat, leaving you with the distinct impression that the best parts of this mixtape were left on the cutting room floor.
