Five Retro Games That Critics Got Wrong and Deserve a Second Look

It’s easy for great but old games to slip out of gaming memory, especially when initial reviews were harsh. The rest have to struggle against time and forgotten cartridges. These five critical flops were actually better than we remember, offering unique mechanics, bold storytelling, or pure fun that reviewers overlooked at launch.

First up is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600. While famously buried in a landfill and panned for its confusing gameplay, the game’s open-world design and item-collection system were ahead of its time. Critics hated the pits, but the challenge of navigating them with limited resources actually rewards patience and memorization.

Next, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness for the Nintendo 64. Reviewers called it clunky compared to Ocarina of Time, but its branching storylines, multiple playable characters, and gothic atmosphere offer a darker, more methodical action-adventure experience that holds up surprisingly well today.

Third is Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Yes, the glitches are legendary, but beneath the bugs lies an ambitious attempt at a realistic Sonic world with multiple story arcs. The soundtrack is phenomenal, and the core speed-based platforming—when it works—is exhilarating. A patch could have saved its reputation.

Fourth, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the NES. Often called unplayable, it’s actually a clever puzzle game about managing two conflicting personas. The side-scrolling sections require precise timing, and the transformation mechanic is a novel risk-reward system that critics simply didn’t understand.

Finally, Superman 64 is infamous, but its open-world Metropolis and flight mechanics were ambitious for 1999. The ring-flying missions are tedious, but free-roaming the city and fighting villains with superpowers feels like a proto-Spider-Man 2. It’s a flawed gem, not a total disaster.

These games prove that critical reception isn’t the final word. Sometimes, a second playthrough reveals hidden depth.
