Xbox Laying Off 3,200 Staffers, CEO Confirms: "Our Business Today Is Not Healthy"

Xbox Laying Off 3,200 Staffers, CEO Confirms:

The head of Microsoft's Xbox division has confirmed a massive round of layoffs, cutting 3,200 positions from the video game unit. In a blunt internal memo, the CEO described the move as "the most significant restructure" in the company's 25-year history and acknowledged that the business is struggling. "Our business today is not healthy," the executive wrote, signaling a major shift in strategy.

The cuts come after years of aggressive expansion, including the high-profile acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Despite owning some of the biggest franchises in gaming, the Xbox division has faced mounting pressure to improve profitability. The layoffs will affect roles across the entire organization, from development teams to corporate support staff.

The CEO emphasized that the restructure is necessary to ensure long-term sustainability. "We need to focus on what matters most," the memo stated, adding that the company will prioritize "efficiency and execution" over growth for growth's sake. Affected employees will receive severance packages and career transition support, though the announcement has sent shockwaves through the industry.

This is not the first round of cuts for Microsoft's gaming arm this year. Earlier in 2025, the company closed several studios and canceled multiple projects. The latest layoffs bring the total number of job losses in the gaming division to over 5,000 since January. Industry analysts note that the cuts reflect a broader trend of consolidation and belt-tightening across the gaming sector, as companies grapple with rising development costs and shifting player habits.
