Why Owning Your Video Games Matters More Than Ever

Why Owning Your Video Games Matters More Than Ever

The shift from physical discs and cartridges to digital downloads has changed how we think about game ownership. For years, players accepted that buying a game through platforms like Steam, PlayStation Store, or Xbox Marketplace meant owning a permanent copy. But recent events have shattered that illusion.

When a game is delisted from a storefront, or when a publisher revokes licenses, players lose access to titles they paid for. This happened with The Crew, where Ubisoft removed the game from libraries, and with various older titles that simply vanished when servers shut down. Unlike a physical disc that sits on your shelf, a digital purchase is really just a long-term rental.

The push for subscription services like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra makes this worse. Players pay monthly fees for access to hundreds of games, but none of them are truly owned. If you stop paying, you lose everything. Even games you bought individually can be taken away if the platform holder decides to change the terms.

Physical media is dying. Many PCs no longer include disc drives, and consoles like the Xbox Series S are digital-only. Some publishers release physical copies that contain only a download code inside the box. This leaves gamers with fewer options for true ownership.

The solution is not simple. Some argue for stronger consumer protection laws that force platforms to maintain access to purchased games. Others point to GOG.com, which sells DRM-free games that you can download and keep forever. But most major publishers resist this model because it limits their control.

For now, the best advice is to buy physical copies when possible, support DRM-free stores, and think twice before building a large digital library. The right to own what you pay for is worth fighting for.
