The future of physical games is not looking great

Players and game preservationists might need to prepare for a world without discs. Recent market trends and corporate strategies suggest that physical media is heading toward a quiet extinction, and the shift is accelerating faster than many expected.

Major retailers are already reducing shelf space for physical games. Best Buy stopped selling them entirely last year, and other big box stores are following suit. The logic is simple: digital downloads now account for over 90% of game sales on PC, and roughly 70% on consoles. For publishers, cutting discs means cutting production, shipping, and retail costs. It also means total control over pricing and access.

But the loss goes beyond convenience. Game preservationists warn that a fully digital future threatens the ability to archive and play older titles. When a game is removed from a digital storefront, it often vanishes forever. Physical copies, even if they require day-one patches, at least offer a baseline version of the game that can be played offline. Without them, entire libraries of software depend on servers that could shut down at any moment.

Some companies are trying to soften the blow. Limited Run Games and other boutique publishers still produce physical editions for collectors, but these are niche products with small print runs. They cannot replace the mass-market availability that once defined the industry.

The console makers are also pushing forward. Sony and Microsoft now sell disc-less versions of their flagship consoles, and the PlayStation 5 Pro does not include a disc drive at all. It is an optional add-on, a clear signal of where the industry is headed.

For now, physical games still exist, but the window is closing. If you care about owning your games in a tangible, permanent form, the time to buy them is now. Once the presses stop, they are not coming back.
