The idea that artificial intelligence will soon allow anyone to create a hit video game on par with titles like the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI has been firmly dismissed by Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive. He labeled the notion as "laughable" and stated it fundamentally "doesn’t stand to reason."
While acknowledging AI as a powerful and valuable tool for developers, Zelnick emphasized that technology alone cannot replicate the creative spark and massive production effort behind top-tier entertainment. He compared the process to other creative industries, suggesting that giving everyone access to AI tools for game development would be like giving everyone a digital audio workstation and expecting a chart-topping album.
True hits, he argued, are born from genius, innovation, and stellar execution—elements that remain inherently human. The development of a title like GTA VI involves thousands of professionals, vast resources, and years of meticulous work across narrative design, world-building, and technical engineering. AI may streamline certain tasks, but it cannot replace the core creative vision and collaborative effort required to build a cultural phenomenon. The executive's comments underscore a belief that while the tools of development may evolve, the recipe for a landmark game will continue to demand unparalleled human talent and scale.
