Studies Offer Mixed Results on Video Games as ADHD Treatment for Children

Three recent studies examined whether video games can help treat childhood ADHD, and the findings do not point in a single direction. Some trials reported measurable gains in attention and impulse control among young players. Others found that children who played a specially designed game performed no better than those who played an ordinary control game, raising questions about how much of the benefit comes from the game itself.

The research focused on games built to train attention and working memory, sometimes called digital therapeutics. In one study, children who used the game showed improved scores on tasks requiring sustained focus. In another, the advantages faded once researchers compared the results against a placebo game that looked similar but lacked the therapeutic design. A third study found modest effects that were difficult to separate from general improvements over time.

Scientists say the mixed picture is not surprising. ADHD varies widely between children, and responses to any treatment differ from one patient to the next. Small sample sizes and short follow-up periods also make it hard to draw firm conclusions. Researchers caution that parents should not replace proven treatments, such as behavioral therapy or medication, with a game alone. Still, the studies suggest that well-designed games could become one part of a broader approach, especially for children who struggle to stay engaged with traditional therapy. More rigorous trials with larger groups are needed before doctors can recommend any game as a standard treatment.
