Sega is taking a nostalgic trip back to the 1990s with a new physical release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games. The company has partnered with iam8bit to produce limited-edition cartridges of the first two Sonic titles for the Sega Genesis. But these are not your typical retro reissues. Each cartridge comes with a hefty price tag of $100.
The cartridges are designed to work with original Genesis hardware, as well as modern plug-and-play consoles like the Sega Genesis Mini and the Analogue Mega SG. According to the announcement, the cartridges include the full, unaltered versions of the games. That means the same pixel art, the same chiptune music, and the same fast-paced gameplay that defined a generation.
Pre-orders are open now, but the price has raised some eyebrows. For $100, buyers get a single game in a collectible box. The packaging is modeled after the original North American release, complete with the iconic black grid background and the red "Sega" logo. It is a premium product aimed at collectors and die-hard fans, not casual players who can already play these games on a dozen different platforms.
The move is part of a broader trend in retro gaming. Companies are increasingly selling high-end physical versions of classic titles, often with special packaging or extras. Whether this $100 price point will find a market remains to be seen. But for those who grew up with a Genesis controller in hand, it might be a tempting piece of gaming history.
