Rockstar Games has quietly rolled out a new offer for players who still own Grand Theft Auto 5 on older consoles. Owners of the PS4 and Xbox One versions can now upgrade to the enhanced PS5 and Xbox Series X/S editions at no extra cost. The move comes nearly three years after the next-gen ports originally launched in 2022, which had previously required a separate purchase or a paid upgrade path for most players.
The offer appears to be tied to Rockstar's ongoing efforts to consolidate its player base ahead of the highly anticipated GTA 6 release. While the company has not made a formal announcement, users on social media have reported seeing the free upgrade option in the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. The enhanced versions include improved graphics, faster loading times, and new features like ray tracing and the GTA Online career builder.
For years, many last-gen players held off on upgrading due to the cost, especially since the game is over a decade old. This new offer effectively removes that barrier, giving longtime fans a reason to revisit Los Santos with better performance. It also signals that Rockstar is looking to keep the GTA Online community active and unified on modern hardware. The upgrade is available now for a limited time, though no expiration date has been confirmed.
