The creator of the cult TV series Danger 5 has turned his attention to Australian Rules football, and the result is a video game that treats the sport's more confusing rules with a healthy dose of absurdity. The new project, called Pro Jank Footy, deliberately leans into a 1990s-era gaming look, complete with blocky graphics and stiff player animations. But the real hook is the power-ups. Think of a player suddenly launching into a rocket-powered tackle or the ball turning into a giant, bouncing beach ball for a few seconds. It is all a bit silly, and that is exactly the point.
The developer has openly said that some of the AFL's more intricate regulations, like the deliberate rushed behind or the complex marking interpretations, feel "ridiculous" to outsiders. So the game takes those moments and amplifies them into over-the-top gameplay mechanics. Instead of trying to be a serious simulation like other footy titles, Pro Jank Footy aims for pure, chaotic fun. The visual style is a loving tribute to early sports games, with pixelated crowds and simple commentary, but the action is anything but straightforward.
Players can expect matches that are fast, frantic, and often nonsensical. The goal is not to perfectly replicate a real game but to capture the energy and unpredictability of a backyard kickabout. It is a playful poke at a national obsession, made by someone who clearly appreciates the sport but is not afraid to laugh at its quirks. For fans who grew up with classic console footy games, this will feel familiar yet fresh. For everyone else, it looks like a great way to enjoy the sport without needing to know every single rule. The game is currently in development, with a release planned for PC and consoles.
