Resale game stores face uncertain future as PlayStation discontinues discs

FITCHBURG, Wis. -- Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that starting in January 2028, it will stop selling physical game discs and shift entirely to digital distribution. The move has sent shockwaves through the small but resilient network of independent resale game stores across the country.

For decades, shops like the one run by Mike Delgado in Fitchburg have relied on a steady flow of used discs. Customers trade in old titles for store credit, and the store resells them at a markup. That model depends entirely on physical media. Without discs to buy and sell, the entire business structure collapses.

"Half my inventory is pre-owned," Delgado said. "If there are no discs coming in, I don't have a product to sell. It's not just new games. It's the whole ecosystem."

Sony's decision follows a broader industry trend. Microsoft and Nintendo have also pushed digital sales, but neither has set a hard cutoff date. Sony's 2028 deadline gives stores a few years to adapt, but many owners say they see no clear path forward. Some are considering shifting to retro games, selling merchandise, or offering repair services. Others worry that without new physical releases, the retro market will eventually dry up too.

The impact extends beyond game stores. Rental services, libraries, and collectors all depend on discs. For now, the used game market remains active, but the clock is ticking.
