The CEO of Moon Studios, the developer behind the Ori series, has shared a blunt critique of Xbox's Game Pass strategy. In a recent interview, he argued that the subscription service "could've worked" if Microsoft had not flooded the platform with what he described as "slop out mediocre content like a factory."
The executive suggested that the core idea of Game Pass was strong, but its execution faltered because Xbox failed to consistently deliver high-quality, must-play exclusives. Instead of curating a lineup of standout titles, he claimed Microsoft prioritized quantity over quality, releasing a stream of average games that diluted the service's value. He implied that a steady diet of truly great games could have made Game Pass an indispensable offering, rather than a library filled with forgettable experiences.
This criticism comes amid ongoing debates about the long-term sustainability of subscription models in gaming. While Game Pass has attracted millions of subscribers, questions remain about whether it can generate enough revenue to fund the blockbuster titles needed to keep players engaged. The Moon Studios CEO's comments echo a broader industry concern: that simply offering a large volume of content is not enough. Without a consistent flow of critically acclaimed, system-selling games, even a well-priced subscription risks feeling like a bargain bin rather than a premium service. His remarks highlight the pressure on Xbox to deliver more hits like Starfield and Forza, rather than relying on a high volume of mid-tier releases.
