Nintendo’s Switch 2 Star Fox game is a remake of Star Fox 64

Nintendo’s Switch 2 Star Fox game is a remake of Star Fox 64

Nintendo has confirmed that the upcoming Star Fox title for the Switch 2 is a full remake of the beloved 1997 classic, Star Fox 64. This marks the first new entry in the franchise in over ten years, following the release of Star Fox Zero on the Wii U in 2016. According to sources familiar with the project, the remake will retain the core structure and branching paths of the original while overhauling the visuals and controls for modern hardware.

The game is expected to run at a smooth 60 frames per second, with high-definition textures and updated character models. It will also feature gyroscopic aiming support, leveraging the Switch 2's improved motion controls. A key addition is a new online multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to compete in dogfights or cooperate in a new "Endless Assault" survival mode.

Fans of the series have long called for a return to the tight, arcade-style gameplay of Star Fox 64, which is widely considered the high point of the franchise. The remake aims to deliver that experience without the divisive motion-control gimmicks that plagued Star Fox Zero. An official release date has not been announced, but the game is rumored to launch alongside the Switch 2 in early 2025.
