A new study involving more than 5,600 adolescents has found a connection between the amount of time spent playing video games and the thickness of the cerebral cortex, the brain's outer layer responsible for complex thinking. The research suggests that teens who game more tend to show a thinner cortex in certain regions. But the findings are not a simple case of "gaming shrinks your brain." Instead, the effects appear to depend heavily on the type of gaming experience.
The study separated gaming into three categories: solo play, social or multiplayer play, and games with mature ratings. The researchers found that the link to a thinner cortex was strongest for teens who spent many hours on solo games. For those who played mostly social games, the association was weaker or even reversed in some brain areas. Mature-rated games, which often contain violent or explicit content, showed their own distinct pattern of brain differences, though the study does not prove these games cause harm.
This is an important distinction. A thinner cortex is not automatically a bad thing. Brain development during the teenage years involves a natural process of pruning, where unused neural connections are trimmed away. This can lead to a thinner cortex as the brain becomes more efficient. So, the thinner cortex seen in heavy gamers might reflect a different developmental path, not necessarily a damaged one.
The study's authors stress that these are correlations, not proof of cause and effect. It is possible that teens with certain brain structures are simply drawn to longer gaming sessions. It is also possible that the type of game, and not the screen time itself, is the key factor. The findings point to the need for more nuanced advice for parents, moving beyond blanket limits on screen time to consider what games a child is playing and with whom. The next step for researchers is to track these teens over time to see if these brain differences lead to any changes in behavior, attention, or mental health.
