MLB Stats Through 20 Games That Make Video Game Numbers Look Realistic

Video games are fun because they can be whatever you want them to be. You can create your own player who can do everything well and, eventually, become the greatest of all time. But sometimes, reality outdoes fantasy. Just 20 games into the current Major League Baseball season, several players are putting up numbers that would seem absurd even in a video game.

Take the case of a certain slugger who is currently batting over .400 while also leading the league in home runs. In any video game, a .400 average with 10-plus homers after 20 games would be dismissed as unrealistic. Yet here we are. Another pitcher has an ERA under 1.00 with more than 40 strikeouts in just four starts. That’s the kind of stat line you’d only expect from a created player with maxed-out ratings.

What makes these numbers even more astonishing is the context. Modern baseball features elite velocity, advanced analytics, and specialized bullpens designed to neutralize hitters. Despite all that, a handful of players are performing at levels that defy logic. One rookie is slugging over .700, a mark that would be considered elite for an entire season, let alone a 20-game sample.

Of course, small sample sizes can produce wild fluctuations. But for now, these early-season performances are turning heads and making even the most outrageous video game stats feel grounded. If this pace continues, we might be witnessing something truly historic—numbers that even the most creative gamer wouldn’t dare to dream up.
