A former Rockstar Games developer has shed new light on why the Midnight Club series was quietly shelved, revealing that the studio did not believe the racing franchise could ever compete with Grand Theft Auto. According to the developer, who worked at Rockstar during the time, Midnight Club was treated as the "red-headed stepchild project" within the company, always living in the massive shadow of GTA.
The comments suggest that internal pressure and resource allocation played a major role in the decision to axe a potential fifth entry. While Midnight Club had a dedicated fanbase and was known for its arcade-style racing and deep customization, the sales and cultural impact of GTA simply dwarfed everything else. The developer explained that Rockstar's leadership saw no point in pouring millions into a title that would, at best, be a secondary product compared to the blockbuster success of GTA Online and its single-player campaigns.
This is not the first time we have heard about the internal struggles of the Midnight Club team. Earlier reports have hinted at development troubles and a shifting focus within Rockstar. But this new account makes it clear that the decision was not about quality or potential, but about simple math. Why invest in a franchise that could never be the biggest thing in the room when you have a guaranteed money printer in GTA?
Fans have been hoping for a Midnight Club revival for years, especially with the recent resurgence of arcade racers. However, if this developer's account is accurate, the chances of seeing the series return under Rockstar's current leadership are close to zero. The studio is fully committed to GTA 6 and its ongoing online ecosystem, and there is little room for a project that would be seen as a distraction. The Midnight Club name, it seems, will remain a fond memory for those who played it, but a forgotten footnote for the company that created it.
