Japanese game company Nintendo reports a jump in profit on the popularity of its Switch 2

TOKYO - Nintendo said its first quarter profit climbed 53.5 percent, driven by steady sales of the Switch 2 console and continued interest in the Super Mario movie released earlier this year. The Japanese gaming giant reported operating income of 145 billion yen, up from 94 billion yen in the same period last year.

The company sold 4.6 million units of the Switch 2 in its first three months on the market, beating internal forecasts. Nintendo also noted that software attach rates were higher than expected, with titles like "Mario Kart World" and "Zelda: Echoes of the Realm" leading the charge. The movie's home video release and streaming availability gave another boost to the company's character licensing revenue.

Nintendo raised its full-year profit forecast by 8 percent, now expecting net income of 480 billion yen. The company said production of the Switch 2 has ramped up to meet demand, and it plans to ship 20 million units by the end of the fiscal year. Analysts see the console's strong start as a good sign, though some caution that the initial wave of buyers may not repeat in the next quarter.

The company also highlighted growth in its mobile and non-gaming segments, including theme park partnerships and merchandise sales. Nintendo's stock rose 2.3 percent in Tokyo trading following the earnings release.
