How To Get The Best Gaming Performance Out Of Your TV

How To Get The Best Gaming Performance Out Of Your TV

If you have a modern television with a mountain of picture settings, you might be leaving serious gaming performance on the table. Most TVs are calibrated out of the box for watching movies or news, not for fast-paced action. To get the smoothest, most responsive experience, you need to dig into the menus.

First, find and enable "Game Mode." This is the single most important setting. It bypasses most of the TV's heavy video processing, which adds input lag. Input lag is the delay between pressing a button on your controller and seeing the action on screen. Game Mode drastically reduces this, making your aim and reactions feel snappy.

Next, check your HDMI port. For the best results, plug your console or PC into the port labeled "HDMI 2.1" if your TV has one. This standard supports higher bandwidth, allowing for 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. Even if your game doesn't hit 120 fps, the extra bandwidth helps with variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. VRR syncs the TV's refresh rate to the game's frame rate, eliminating screen tearing and stuttering.

Finally, turn off any "motion smoothing" or "soap opera effect" settings. These artificially insert frames to make movement look smoother for video, but they add lag and can make games feel floaty or weird. Stick with Game Mode, enable VRR if available, and disable all post-processing effects. Your TV will look a bit less polished for menus, but your gameplay will be faster and more accurate.
