Some video games don't just want to be difficult, they want to destroy a player's spirit from the first level, and these five do that best. While most games ease players in with a gentle tutorial, these titles throw you into the deep end with no floaties.
First up is "Battletoads" for the NES. The Turbo Tunnel level is infamous for a reason. Players have to navigate a high-speed hoverbike through a maze of walls, gaps, and obstacles with almost no room for error. One wrong move means instant death and a restart from the beginning. Many kids in the 90s never made it past this stage.
Then there is "Ninja Gaiden" for the Xbox. The opening level pits you against aggressive enemies that swarm from all directions. The game expects you to master complex combos and precise blocking before you have even learned the controls. It is a wall that stops most players cold.
"Dark Souls" deserves a mention, but not for the Asylum Demon. The real nightmare is the graveyard near Firelink Shrine. New players wander in and face skeletons that are far too strong. The game offers no hint that you should go a different way. Hours of frustration follow.
"Super Mario: The Lost Levels" is pure cruelty. The first level already features tricky jumps, hidden blocks that kill you, and wind that pushes Mario into pits. This was the real Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan, and it made many players quit before the first castle.
Finally, "Lion King" for the SNES. The first level is a gentle stampede scene. But the second level, "Can't Wait to Be King," requires pixel-perfect jumps on moving platforms while avoiding falling off the screen. Children cried. Parents raged. The game remains a symbol of unfair difficulty.
These games prove that sometimes the hardest part is just getting started.
