Fifth annual Retro Game Fest draws gamers in Eugene

Fifth annual Retro Game Fest draws gamers in Eugene

The fifth annual Retro Game Fest kicked off in Eugene this weekend, drawing a crowd of nostalgic players and curious newcomers alike. Founded during the early days of the pandemic, the event has grown into a staple for the local gaming community, offering a hands-on celebration of both classic and modern video games.

Attendees wandered through rows of vintage consoles, from the Atari 2600 to the Nintendo 64, with many stations set up for free play. Organizers also included a selection of newer indie titles, bridging the gap between old-school pixel art and contemporary game design. The festival featured tournaments, cosplay contests, and a small vendor area where collectors could buy and trade cartridges, controllers, and memorabilia.

What started as a small gathering to lift spirits during lockdowns has now become a multi-generational event. Parents who grew up with 8-bit games brought their children to experience the same joysticks and chiptune soundtracks. "It's about sharing what made us fall in love with gaming," one volunteer said. "You see a kid try a game from 1985, and they get just as excited as someone playing a brand new release."

The festival also included a quiet room for sensory breaks, a move praised by families with young children. With steady attendance throughout the weekend, the Retro Game Fest shows no signs of slowing down, proving that the love for retro games is far from outdated.
