One of the earliest tactical role-playing games ever created is finally arriving on modern consoles, more than 40 years after its original release. The 1985 title, widely considered a pioneer of the tactical RPG genre, will launch on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, bringing its grid-based combat and strategic depth to a new generation of players.
Originally released for home computers in the mid-80s, the game introduced mechanics that would go on to define the tactical RPG genre, including turn-based movement on a tile map, character classes, and permadeath. Its influence can be seen in later franchises like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, and XCOM. Despite its age, the game has maintained a cult following, with fans keeping it alive through emulation and fan translations.
The new ports promise updated controls, save states, and visual enhancements while preserving the original gameplay and retro aesthetic. No specific release date has been announced, but the publisher confirmed the game will be available digitally on both platforms. This marks the first official console release for the title, which previously only appeared on PC and a few obscure Japanese systems. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, it is a chance to experience a foundational piece of gaming history without needing vintage hardware.
