Bungie has announced a round of layoffs, citing that the latest expansion for Destiny 2 failed to meet internal sales and engagement goals. In a public statement, the studio expressed regret over the decision, writing, "With great sadness, we are announcing a reduction in force."
The developer acknowledged that the recent content release for Destiny 2 "fell short of expectations," leading to a financial shortfall. While Bungie did not specify the exact number of employees affected, the company stated that the cuts are part of a broader effort to restructure and refocus its development pipeline.
This is not the first time Bungie has faced workforce reductions in recent years. The studio has been under pressure to maintain player interest in the aging Destiny franchise while also developing new intellectual property. In the announcement, leadership took responsibility for the overambitious scope of the recent update, admitting that the team had not delivered the quality or volume of content that players expected.
Affected employees will receive severance packages and career transition support. Bungie emphasized that it remains committed to supporting the Destiny 2 community and that future updates are still planned, though the studio will operate with a leaner team moving forward.
