The first Resident Evil almost became something entirely different. Before it turned into the survival horror landmark that defined a genre, the project began as a remake of an older Capcom game called Sweet Home. That plan fell apart, but the haunted house concept stuck, and the team rebuilt the idea from the ground up with a new setting and a new identity.
The game's infamous live action opening was a disaster behind the scenes. The original Japanese release featured a bizarre sequence with real actors that many fans now mock. Capcom later replaced it with a more polished cinematic for Western audiences, though the cheesy version remains a cult favorite.
Voice acting sessions were another mess. The English dub is legendary for its wooden delivery and awkward lines, and reports suggest the actors had little direction. Some claim they were not told what was happening in the scenes, which explains lines like "Jill, here's a lockpick."
Development also pushed the team to the brink. Budgets were tight, schedules were short, and the pressure to make a hit was enormous. The mansion's design changed repeatedly, and entire rooms were cut. What survived became a blueprint for horror games that followed.
