Amazon is significantly reducing the scope of its cloud gaming service, Luna. The company has confirmed it will discontinue its third-party subscription channels and the dedicated Luna store. This strategic retreat marks a notable shift for the tech giant's venture into the competitive game streaming market.
The service, which allowed users to stream games directly to various devices without dedicated hardware, launched with a multi-channel approach. This included a core Luna+ channel from Amazon and partnerships with publishers like Ubisoft. Moving forward, Amazon will focus solely on its primary Luna+ offering and free Prime Gaming channels for subscribers. The company stated the decision was made to "prioritize our resources and focus on a great Luna experience in the future."
This downsizing reflects the broader challenges within the cloud gaming sector, which requires massive infrastructure investment and has struggled to achieve mainstream adoption at scale. While Luna will continue to operate for existing subscribers of its core channels, the end of third-party partnerships suggests a consolidation of its ambitions. The move allows Amazon to refine its offering in a market where even major players are carefully calibrating their investments.
